Double Drowning, Merrimack River, Canterbury

On Saturday, May 30, 2020 at approximately 7:46 PM, New Hampshire State Police – Marine Patrol dispatch received a 9-1-1 caller reporting people in the water who appeared to be struggling. NHSP-Marine Patrol, NH Fish and Game, Canterbury Police and Fire Departments, Boscawen Police and Fire Departments, Penacook Fire Department, and Concord Fire Department responded to the scene located on the Merrimack River in Canterbury.
Initial investigation revealed that four people had been in the water near Pebble Beach when two began struggling. Despite efforts from the other two people to help pull them from the water, they went underwater and did not resurface. Rescue efforts continued through the evening until the search was suspended.
The search resumed in the morning on May 31st. New Hampshire Fish and Game divers located the first victim, a 21-year old female at 8:19 AM. They recovered the second victim, a 27-year old male, at 8:36 AM.
The incident remains under investigation. The victims' names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Additional details will be released via updated press releases as information becomes available. The male victim was identified as Albert Ntangri, age 27 of Manchester, NH.
