Fleeing Motorcyclist Apprehended after Mechanical Issues
CANTERBURY, New Hampshire – Shortly before 12:30 a.m., on September 22, 2023, Trooper Zachary Bilotta of the New Hampshire State Police Troop D Barracks was monitoring traffic on Interstate 93 north in the city of Concord. While doing so, Trooper Bilotta observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed and obtained a speed reading via radar of 115 MPH. Trooper Bilotta attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop, but the motorcyclist fled.
A short time later, Trooper Bilotta located the motorcyclist walking the motorcycle on the off ramp to the Canterbury Rest Area. After observing Trooper Bilotta, the rider, later identified as:
Nathanial J BERGERON
Age: 27
Pittsfield, NH
fled into the woods on foot. Additional Troopers, including Trooper Matthew Field and his K-9 partner Jax, responded to the scene to assist. While awaiting the arrival of additional Troopers, Trooper Bilotta was able to examine the motorcycle and learn that it had suffered an engine failure during BERGERON’s flight.
After arriving on scene and beginning a track, K-9 Jax tracked through the woods around the Canterbury Rest Area and back on to Interstate 93. A short time later, K-9 Jax was able to locate BERGERON in the woods in the median between Interstate 93 north and south. BERGERON was taken into custody without further incident. After BERGERON had been taken into custody, Troopers learned that BERGERON had active warrants for his arrest with other agencies. BERGERON also informed Troopers that, while fleeing in the woods, he had ingested heroin. Troopers requested an ambulance to the scene and worked to keep BERGERON conscious and alert until EMS personnel arrived.
BERGERON was transported to Concord Hospital for medical treatment, and was later transported to the Merrimack County Jail, where he was held pending his arraignment in the Merrimack County Superior Court.
In addition to the arrest warrants, BERGERON was also charged with Disobeying an Officer, Operating while certified as a habitual offender, resisting arrest, and reckless operation.
The State Police were assisted on scene by the Boscawen and Northfield Police Departments, the Canterbury Fire Department, Penacook Rescue, and Matt Brown’s Truck Repair.
