Recovered Stolen Trailer - Windham

On 8-22-19 at 0715hrs TFC Holston was operating the I93 Northbound Weigh station in Windham. All commercial vehicles were being instructed to enter through a series of signs and traffic signals. At the indicated time a:

2009 Freightliner Tractor
Color: Tan
Bearing NJ Registration: AU980W
Towing a
2020 Utility Refrigerator Trailer
Color: White
Bearing NJ Registration: TTN49W

was observed traveling through the scales. TFC Holston attempted to stop the vehicle using the traffic lights. The driver failed to stop at the red traffic lights and proceeded back onto the interstate. TFC Holston was able to track and stop the truck and it was escorted back into the weigh station. As TFC Holston initiated his inspection he determined that the driver did not possess his license or the trailer registration. He further learned that the plate on the trailer did not belong on it and the VIN decal had been removed. TFC Holston also noticed a few other identifying decals had been removed. On the rear of the trailer the outline of Hirschbach could be seen. The driver informed TFC Holston that the trailer was a Hyundai trailer.

Based on several features and decals on the trailer TFC Holston knew this wasn't a Hyundai trailer and was a Utility trailer instead. TFC Holston was able to locate a secondary VIN number and contacted the trailer manufacturer who informed him that the trailer was a 2020 trailer and was sold to Hirschbach Motor Lines. TFC Holston contacted Hirschbach Motor lines who confirmed that the trailer was still owned by them. They further advised that the trailer was last tracked by GPS in July in the Bronx, NY. Once in Bronx, NY the GPS was disconnected. Hirschbach confirmed that the company currently in possession of the trailer did not have their permission to have the trailer. Hirschbach Motor Lines later confirmed that the trailer was in fact stolen from Philadelphia, PA where it was left by a previous driver.

The trailer was impounded and later returned to Hirschbach Motor Lines. There was no damage to the trailer other than the missing decals and the disconnected GPS. The trailer was valued at approximately $68,000.

At this time the investigation remains open while more follow up on the case is being coordinated with other agencies.
