Swanzey Man Taken Into Custody Following Hourslong Standoff

Troop C

SWANZEY, N.H. – A man is in custody following a nearly 15-hour standoff in Swanzey.

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at approximately 10:09 p.m., the New Hampshire State Police received a request for assistance from the Swanzey Police Department. Troopers learned that while investigating a disturbance at a home on South Road, the suspect, identified as Ian MacNeil, 36, of Swanzey, pointed a firearm at a Swanzey police officer. MacNeil then refused to exit his residence.

Throughout the overnight hours, Troopers worked with Swanzey officers to encourage MacNeil to surrender.

Around 1 p.m. today, Sept. 12, 2024, a State Police K9 apprehended MacNeil, who was then safely taken into custody. MacNeil suffered minor injuries related to the K9 apprehension and was transported to Cheshire Medical Center for treatment.

MacNeil has been charged with a felony count of criminal threatening with a deadly weapon and a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest.

A section of South Road was closed during the incident and residents in the area were asked to leave as a precaution for their safety. Law enforcement is appreciative of their cooperation.

The Swanzey Police Department, Cheshire County Sheriff's Office, Cheshire County EMS and Swanzey Fire Department assisted the State Police in bringing the incident to a safe conclusion.

No booking photo is available at this time. Further inquiries should be directed to the Swanzey Police Department.
