Wrong Way Driver on Interstate 89
Sutton, New Hampshire – On Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at approximately 11:50 PM, a Trooper from the New Hampshire State Police – Troop D notified dispatch that he was almost struck head on by a wrong way driver on I-89 northbound.
The Trooper reported the vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when it almost hit the Trooper’s cruiser while working a construction detail. During this time the cruiser was working with emergency lights activated. The vehicle swerved just before hitting the cruiser and continued traveling south in the northbound lanes. Shortly thereafter, the Trooper was able to identify that the vehicle randomly stopped in the middle of the highway, thus allowing the Trooper to position himself to intercept the vehicle.
After further investigation, the operator of the vehicle Matthew Hart, 38 of Wareham, MA was arrested for DWI and felony reckless conduct with a motor vehicle. The passenger Anna Mattin, 39, of VA was placed into protective custody due to her impairment level. Both subjects were transported to the Merrimack County Jail. The vehicle was seized and is pending a search warrant. This case is still under investigation and other charges may be forthcoming.
New Hampshire State Police – Troop D was assisted on scene by the New London Police Department. The left lane of Interstate 89 north was shut down for a short time to complete the roadside investigation.
All aspects of the case remain under investigation and anyone who may have witnessed this event are asked to contact Trooper Samuel Provenza at Samuel.P.Provenza@dos.nh.gov or (603) 223-6162.
